Lance Armstrong and the Global Economy With 5 Tour De France wins, Lance Armstrong has firmly put himself and cycling (at least for one race) on the U.S. sports map. But what you may not know is how he's revered in the global economy. You'll find that I'm embellishing here, but did you know that Lance was referenced in an August 25, 2003 article in BusinessWeek on "The Future of Tech". And it wasn't in a cycling article or referencing his hi-tech Trek bikes. Or his many lucrative sponsorship deals. The reference came when Intel Corp. Chairman, Andy Grove, responded to BW about information technology being so pervasive that it no longer offered companies competitive advantages. Grove said, "It's like saying: "I have an old three-speed bike, and Lance Armstrong has a bike. So why should he have a competitive advantage?"" Velo Allegro's San Diego Ride - July 19-20, 2003 The ride leaves the Marina at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday [07/19/03] and they end up in Old Town San Diego that afternoon. I believe there is a sag wagon of some sort because members have overnight wear and bathing suits for a Jacuzzi, etc., that evening. Traffic Collision is Near Miss for Velo Allegro 09 June 2003 - Anthony D. Morrow Life was put in perspective for many of those on Velo Allegro's ride this past Saturday, including my own. As part of the usual course, the ride's main group was stopped at the northbound left-turn lane of Goldenwest at about 8:20 AM, waiting to turn west onto Slater. Suddenly, a flatbed 18-wheeler, headed southbound, slammed into a vintage Corvette across the intersection. The car burst into a ball of flames, was pushed through the intersection, and over a fire hydrant. The 30 or so riders were within feet of the immense heat and flame of the fireball and collision. Everyone either dropped their bicycles or ran away with them to the opposite curb. Thankfully, none of the riders were injured. The driver of the Corvette, David William Huie, 60, of Huntington Beach was killed instantly. The driver of the truck and a female passenger quickly climbed through flames and out of the cab. They suffered minor injuries and were treated at a hospital. As a testament to most cyclists' commitment and a fact that life does go on, after gathering themselves at the scene, many carried on with the rest of the ride, all with a refreshed prespective and appreciation for their lives. SAT, June 07, 8:30AM Chino Hills State Park Brush work on two or three singletracks in the park. No experience needed, just a pulse and a willingness to break a sweat. Bring gloves, long pants, sturdy shoes and plenty of water. Some may be able to ride in to the work site on bike to the entrance of the trail a few miles away.
