Attendance
Velo Allegro's Saturday ride is traditionally the ride that attracts the most club members. During the racing season the ride consists of as many as 100 riders and rarely drop below 30, with exception of rainy days.
Overview
The ride is made up of two parts. The first part heads out from the Marina south on PCH toward Huntington Beach. We turn inland at Goldenwest to the Boeing facility near Bolsa Chica Rd. and Westminster. At that point, we regroup and then split off to do the second part of the ride known as the Lampson Loop, or more affectionately, the "Hammer Zone".
After regrouping, the ride splits into two or three groups which ride around the Naval Weapons Station (Westminster/Seal Beach Blvd./Lampson/Bolsa Chica St.). The first one or two are for speed training and the last group usually heads straight to our sponsor, Polly's Coffee, for after-ride refreshment.
Detailed Route Info
The warm-up goes from the Marina south on PCH, a left turn at Goldenwest into Huntington Beach, left at Slater, right on Graham, and up Graham to Bolsa Ave. where we make a left turn to regroup at the south end of the Boeing complex near the bus shelters. In all, the warm-up route is 13 miles. Back to the Marina is a total of about 17.5 miles. The ride reaches the Boeing facility about 8:45 AM.
Usually there are three groups that head out for the Hammer Zone; the fastest first, then the moderate, then the slow or return group. The ride from the start to the Boeing facility is about 13 miles. The Hammer Zone is a loop consisting of Wesminster Ave, Seal Beach Blvd., Lampson Ave, and Bolsa Chica Road. The groups generally do 2 or 3 laps of the Hammer Zone. One lap is about 6.25 miles. So, if you do the ride, plus 2 laps of the Hammer Zone, and then return to the Marina, you're looking at a 30 mile ride. You'd probably be back by 9:30-10:00A.
