Healthy Body: Exercise Your Memory
07/30/08 - from PARADE (07/13/08), by Michael O'Shea
The cure for memory loss may be as simple as learning to ride a bike--literally. By age 50, even the healthiest of us begin to experience some decline in memory. But a new review of studies from France, Sweden, and the U.S. suggests that regular aerobic exercise, such as jogging, swimming, or biking, can increase cardio-respiratory fitness by up to 14%, which may help improve brain function. Researchers believe that the increased blood flow stimulates production of neurotransmitters. Staying fit also helps stave off certain diseases that can precipitate mental decline. Our advice: Put a reminder on your door to get moving!

Stolen Manhole Covers Cause Injuries
07/05/08 - excerpt from USA TODAY (06/2908) by Stefanie Frith
New Street Crime: Thieves Lift Manhole Covers
Hundreds of manhole covers have been stolen in several states over the last three months. The 200-pound covers have been reported stolen in California, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, and Georgia. Law enforcement officials believe that the unusual thefts are tied to the weak economy and record-high scrap metal prices.
The price of heavy melt steal, which is used in manhole covers, rose from $329 per metric ton in January to $519. A thief can get up to $15 for an individual manhole cover.
Long Beach, Calif., has lost over 80 covers this year and faces lawsuits from people who damaged their cars driving over open manholes. In Philadelphia two children were injured when they fell into uncovered drains.

In Memory of Lee Meyers
01/25/08 - Lee Myers peacefully passed away today. He was a passionate and exceptional individual. He was a true competitor. Lee won two tandem time trial state championships and competed at the national level in the same discipline. Lee was very involved with Velo Allego and was a prominent supporter of the women's elite racing team. His love of bicycles did not end with competition and support; he spent a number of his retirement hours at Main Street Cyclery selling and wrenching.
Lee was a generous individual that enjoyed helping people get involved with riding, whether it is for transportation, recreation or for the thrill of competition. We will miss his vibrant personality.
Memorial donations can be sent in Lee's name to the American Cancer Society.

RED MEANS STOP!
Obeying traffic signals is the law. Breaking the law invites a run-in with law enforcement, or worse, a collision. Bicyclist do not defeat cars.
There is no honor in the yellow/red light breakaway. Consider your safety and the safety of those around you. Obey the law or ride elsewhere.
